Our brains are fascinating and complex. Recent research and
technical advances have created new understandings about its complexity
and fragility. Brain health can be affected by viruses, by
genetic predisposition to diseases, and by alcohol and drugs.
As President of NAMI of Whatcom County, I volunteer to help families
who find themselves dealing with illnesses of the brain. These
illnesses, such as depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive
disorder, anxiety disorders and schizophrenia, can be harsh diseases.
Often longheld misunderstandings about these illnesses and the
stigma which follows encourage inappropriate treatments. NAMI serves
as a support group for families; it advocates for better treatments
and it educates the public about these illnesses.
